A thumper is a vessel, partially filled with some inert liquid (water, extra mash etc.). The still's head has a pipe that comes out of the pot, and goes into this thump keg, and the tip of the column is submerged in the liquid.
Some moonshiners use a thump keg, which is simply a heated barrel into which the steam is forced. Some solid material from the mash usually comes along with the steam, so the thump keg, so named for the thumping sound the bits of mash make when they drop into the barrel, re evaporates the alcohol, filtering out the mash. I run a thumper that is the same size as the boiler. These are my opinions. For whiskey, fresh mash works best in the thumper. you can flavor neutral spirts this way For efficiency heads and tails are used. But are best added back to the boiler. For clean shine, I use water. Save the thumper juice to top off the boiler.
Understanding how reflux columns and thumper kegs work allows you design and make better ones. I suspect future designs will resemble this "Westcoast Refluxing" tm.

I added a thumper to the pot still. a thumper is a container with a solution containing alcohol, the hot alcohol vapor from the still heats this mix up and causes effectively a second distillation increasing the alcohol content you would normally get out. Some people have referred to this as a doubler, but I have never seen double output produced.
